Microsoft Must Shed Office Image to Compete with iPad

Microsoft is expected to preview a company-branded tablet at an event in Los Angeles today, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the plans aren’t public. However, the company needs to shed its image as the world’s biggest purveyor of workplace software and draw on its success selling the Xbox gaming console if it wants a shot at introducing a tablet to challenge the  iPad.

When it comes to browsing the web on iOS, there are plenty of third-party alternatives to Apple’s Safari. Atomic, Dolphin, Mercury, Opera Mini, and Skyfire are just a few that have enjoyed some measure of success on the platform, but one name that has been noticeably absent from the category thus far is Mozilla. To this point, the company’s sole offering has been an iPhone-only app that syncs tabs from a PC or Mac to your handset — assuming Firefox is your home browser of choice, that is. Judging by a presentation from the company’s Product Design Strategy team this past Thursday, however, Mozilla will soon be joining the fray in a big way.

Early results at Worldreader, A San Francisco-based non-profit,  are promising, says Mr. Risher, 46, a former Amazon executive who has raised about $1.5 million for his two-year-old program from foundations, individual donors like Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, publishers and Amazon itself. It has distributed 1,100 Kindles and 180,000 e-books to kids and teachers in Ghana, Kenya and Uganda.


Kindle Fire Price May Be Dropped to $149

As Amazon is said to be considering launching new e-book readers and 7-inch tablet PC products at the beginning of the third quarter, the company is expected to have a chance to reduce its existing 7-inch Kindle Fire pricing to US$149 to help transition to the upcoming new tablet PC products, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

E-book publisher RosettaBooks LLC has struck a deal with Mr. Churchill’s estate to publish nearly all of the legendary British prime minister’s writings, including his speeches, the first time most of the titles have been available digitally.
